PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat December 2025: Narsapuram Crochet Gets National Recognition

In December 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated a segment of his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address to the crochet artisans of Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh — shining a national spotlight on one of India's oldest and most intricate handcraft traditions.

Narsapuram, a small coastal town in West Godavari district, has been the heart of India's crochet industry for over 150 years. The craft is practised almost exclusively by women, passed down through generations, and today supports thousands of families across the region.

What makes Narsapuram crochet unique is that every piece is made entirely by hand — no machines, no shortcuts. Each stitch is worked with a single hook and thread, a process that can take hours for a single garment. The result is clothing and accessories with a texture, drape, and character that no factory can replicate.

In 2018, Narsapuram crochet was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India — the same protected status given to Darjeeling tea and Kanchipuram silk. The GI tag is a formal recognition that Narsapuram crochet is an authentic regional heritage product, verifiable and irreplaceable.

At Crochiah, every product we sell is crafted by these same women artisans of Narsapuram. Browse our handmade crochet tops & dresses, crochet bags, and crochet accessories — each piece carrying the heritage PM Modi called worthy of national pride.
