Narsapuram Crochet Lace: The Craft, Its GI Tag and How It Is Made
A guide to the craft
Narsapuram crochet lace: a hook, a thread, and a lifetime of patience.
Narsapuram crochet lace is made with a single crochet hook and fine cotton thread. It comes from Narasapur in the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh and has a heritage of over 150 years, according to the Government of India's Mann Ki Baat booklet. It holds a Geographical Indication tag, and on 28 December 2025 the Prime Minister spoke about it on Mann Ki Baat.
A craft passed down
Women have preserved the craft for generations, passing the skill from one maker to the next.
The craft today
In Mann Ki Baat (episode 129, 28 December 2025), the Prime Minister said: “The Narasapuram Lace has also received the GI Tag. Today, more than 500 products are being made from it, and approximately one lakh women in more than 250 villages are getting employment from it.” The Geographical Indication tag protects the name for lace made in this region.
How a piece is made
A maker works fine cotton thread with a single crochet hook, by hand. At Crochiah one maker makes each piece after you order, over 5–7 working days. That time is the value: a piece made this way is not produced in advance and is not one of thousands.
Why it matters to the women who make it
The Government of India's Mann Ki Baat booklet (December 2025) describes the craft as practised predominantly by women from local farming communities. In Mann Ki Baat the Prime Minister said that approximately one lakh women in more than 250 villages get employment from it.
How Crochiah works with the craft
Crochiah is the consumer brand of a family crochet export house in Narsapur with more than 30 years of work. We work with more than 100 women makers. Every Crochiah piece is made by hand by one maker after you order, in 5–7 working days, so nothing is produced until someone wants it. We make clothing, bags, gifts and home pieces, ship free across India, and take corporate and bulk orders from 50 pieces.
